The
Mystick Krewe of LAFF Social Aid & Pleasure Club Inc. was
founded in 1992 by New Orleans aficionados with the goal of creating a traditional
Mardi Gras carnival organization “Krewe” and New Orleans-style Social Aid and
Pleasure Club here in Chicago. The group has gained members and momentum over
the years.
Unlike
some traditional New Orleans krewes, LAFF’s membership is diverse in race, ethnicity
and orientation. Membership is open to anyone, though new members must be nominated
by a current Krewe member.
It
is our goal to educate Chicagoans about the history and cultural influences
of Carnival in the United States and Southern Louisiana culture in general via
special events. The organization is a not-for-profit corporation.

The
Krewe’s largest event is its Annual Mardi Gras Bash usually held on the
Saturday evening before Fat Tuesday. This event features live entertainment,
food and drink, a second-line parade,
dancing and raffle prizes for the enjoyment of its members and guests.
Over the past few years our Mardi Gras Bash has been held in the prestigious
Preston Bradley Hall at the Chicago Cultural Center. Formal attire or costume
is required.
In
cooperation with the City of Chicago, the Mystick Krewe of LAFF has been
a big hit with its Second Line Parade down Michigan Avenue to open up Jazz Fest,
"starting the party" for the Mayor's Halloween fundraiser as well
as other City and corporate events.
The Mystick Krewe of LAFF also joins together to “give back to the community”. It is the overarching goal of LAFF to live up to the creed for American Carnival first adopted by New Orleans’ own Krewe of REX - Pro bono Publico! - For the Public Good. Through volunteer work at food pantries and soup kitchens and the production of fundraising events for other not-for-profits, our Krewe joins together to accomplish this goal....
